In 1986, a group of dairy farmers located in Quebec’s Farming Heartland realized something in common. They were all practicing conventional farming with a strong interest in organic agriculture. Through seminars, training course, field visits and trial and error, these farmers made the switch from conventional to organic farming.
During this learning period, these farmers educated themselves about the usage of alternative medicine for the cows, changes in the way the young calves were raised, the importance of composting, green manure and field rotation.
Their traditional methods of farming, daily activities and love of farming complimented their goal of going organic. Amoung this group of farmers, 10 chose to form L’Ancêtre.
They wanted to protect the organic milk from being integrated with the conventional system so they decided to make organic cheese.
After years of work and perseverance, the first launch of organic cheddar was finally achieved in the Fall of 1993. These products became so popular that in 1996, L’Ancêtre has its own cheese factory and became the first in Canada to use organic raw milk in the cheese making process.
Today, we still get the milk of families owned and operated farms that continues to flourish under the guidance of very dedicated farmers.
